Last activity was in 2019, no news I could find anywhere, anyone knows what happened? Did Twitter decide to abandon this? Even if so, what happened to all the open source contributors?

Unfortunately, yes, the larger internal project was cancelled. Contributors outside of Twitter didn't really exist for Rsc.
