enable sliding view using a button

Is there a way to open and close the "draw" in sliding view using a button like the button with 3 lines that some apps have in the top left
Is there a way to close the sidebar when someone clicks and item so that they can see their content without having to close the sidebar first

This is exactly what I'm trying to do! Without success so far.. but I'll keep at it.
