Seeking guidance for similar project #3

Ever since I saw this project, I knew I needed to make something similar. I had an idea one day. “What if I made this, but instead of a camera you have Wi-Fi functionality?”
I absolutely love this project, and I want to create a universal system where the playdate talks to a Teensy 4.1, and the teensy talks to an ESP-32 or Arduino with Wi-Fi, and then sent back to the play date. I could make a custom library/package/thing for Lua on the playdate that automatically communicates with everything and allows for HTTP requests or stuff. This would allow online games and services!
I am not the best with coding though. If you could explain how the communication between the play date and the teensy 4.1 work, that would be great because I am relatively new to coding and would like to know how it all works.
