New elements hidden when autoLayout is off #38

Description
When the autoLayout is turned off and I add a new element, often this new element is placed behind an existing one.
When this happened the first time it took me a while to figure out what went wrong.
Steps to reproduce
I am not able to reproduce this behavior every time. Just take an existing workspace, turn off the autoLayout, and start adding new elements. After a while you should get an element that gets placed behind an existing one.
