Size bloat in recent versions

The size from 1.7.1 to the current version is almost double. I assume this is mostly because of a newer compiler version but it should be investigated which switches it will still accept to keep the size down (win98? 512 alignment?).

Can't tell if you are joking or not. I'm talking about the file size.

It's certainly the compiler being used now. Also I probably statically link the C runtime because the compiler requires a much more modern version now that isn't reliably present. (msvcrt.dll doesn't cut it any longer). Certainly investigations could take place to figure out equivalent size reduction tricks.
