For my paying customers (I am a freelance consultant-cum-developer) I justify my hourly rates by explaining they are getting 2 for 1 value – an expert in Windows problem solving/fixing and a seasoned software developer which is rare, at least in the EUC space, and enables me to produce robust, efficient solutions in code although these solutions are private to those customers.

In my “spare” time, which can include regular working hours when I don’t have a full calendar of paid work, I produce utilities, over 150 at the last count, which either I need or I think will benefit others & because I have a multi-vendor lab, I can develop & test them thoroughly – robustness being one of my core principals.

The problem is that the more time I spend on community work, the less I earn so I would ask that if any of my utilities have helped your company, please consider sponsoring my community work.
