What is the optimal puck location for split keyboards?

Where is the best place to put this? 
Based on images on splitkb, it looks like it's often centered between the index and middle finger at the bottom of the home row, and tweaked a bit for board layout? 
Are there recommended edge clearances?  
Can you add reference images?
