Question: what if we would like to save old groups to an account?

Totally understand the benefit on no-account setup needed.

But if we wanted ability to be able to revisit old spliits, is there a way to associate all groups of the past to a single account?

You basically have a few options here:

• Export your old groups as CSV and archive them locally. Just be aware that the current CSV export is still quite limited in its functionality – I’ve tried to address this in my last PR ([Feature request] CSV export: switch to per‑expense saldo format and remove reimbursement column #473) and described the existing limitations and proposed format changes in the related issue (CSV export loses information #342).
• Manually collect and store the group URLs, for example by saving them as browser bookmarks or in a separate document, so you can still access them even if they’re no longer prominently listed in the UI.
• If you’re comfortable self‑hosting, you could also run your own password‑protected Spliit instance with “permanent” groups and account handling – I’ve created a fork for this at https://github.com/Uli-Z/spliit-room.
• From a technical perspective, it would also be possible to build a custom frontend with proper account handling that talks to the public Spliit API from the outside and integrates group management into user accounts. That’s just an idea, but it would allow building features like this without changing Spliit’s core “no‑account” design

Yeah i think the last bullet is what I'd most like to see.
The core no account principle should not be changed

But there should be the opportunity for those who want it
