Description
Name: Geospatial metadata for research products
Acronym or suggested repo name: ext-geo-skg
Proponent(s): Daniel Nüst
Brief motivation: Geospatial metadata has the potential to act as a cross-disciplinary/inter-disciplinary/trans-disciplinary integrator of academic resources. Geospatial coordinates and timestamps are a very well-defined reference system an can connect research products from any discipline via direct (where and when was the data captured) and indirect (what regions are stories, artifacts, people connected with) relations.
This extension add extra properties to the core entity research product to model geospatial metadata, i.e., the location (point, line, region/polygon) and time stamp(s), in machine-readable and human-readable form. As part of the extension, we will also provide suggested crosswalks of specific properties to other metadata schemas or publication options, such as Dublin Core, Schema.org, or HTML meta tags.
Furthermore, it enables the creation of regional narratives by linking together diverse research products and exploration of research products using cartographic methods, e.g., interactive maps.
The GEO-SKG extension could be conceptualised in the context of the project KOMET in order to support discovery and findability of the long tail of research products.
