Getting started development guide

Would you give a few commands that could get me started with development? I did make an effort (i.e. searching the net for help). Alternatively, links to howtos would be welcome.

Make sure berhnhard (a Riemann client) is available before you start working on run-and-report.py, e.g. pip install bernhard. If you're using a debian system (like Ubuntu) you could also install the python-protobuf and python-bernhard packages.

The --debug flag is pretty helpful, it'll print the message that gets sent to Riemann before sending it. I've also found it useful to add print statements in the script to help me reason about what's happening.

I'd recommend running run-and-report.py with something simple that you can control the behavior of when testing. E.g. using 'exit 3' as the command will result in the command exiting with status 3.
