unable to flash my ESP32-S3 Super Mini using the MSI program

The ESP32-S3 Super Mini is a compact variant that can have USB driver detection issues.

Step 1: Verify the board is detected

If no device appears:

• Try a different USB cable (some are charge-only, no data)
• Try a different USB port (prefer direct connection, not through a hub)

Step 2: Enter bootloader mode manually

The ESP32-S3 Super Mini requires a specific button sequence:

1. Hold the BOOT button (sometimes labeled "0" or "GPIO0")
2. Press and release the RESET button (sometimes labeled "RST" or "EN")
3. Release the BOOT button

The LED may blink or change color to indicate bootloader mode.

Step 3: Install drivers

Windows: Install the CP210x USB to UART driver or CH340 driver depending on your board's USB chip.

macOS: Usually works out of the box, but you may need to allow the driver in System Preferences → Security & Privacy.

Linux: Add your user to the dialout group:

ESP32-S3 Super Mini Flashing

The MSI installer may not handle all USB-serial chip variants. The Super Mini boards often use a different USB bridge chip than the standard DevKitC.

Recommended: Flash manually with esptool

We also found that the committed sdkconfig had CSI disabled — fixed in #241 (ADR-057). If you build from source, pull latest to get the fix. Pre-built binaries will be updated in the next release.

The ESP32-S3 Super Mini often has 4MB flash (not 8MB). If the MSI installer assumes 8MB, flashing will fail.

Try the manual flash method with the new v0.4.3.1 release which includes dedicated 4MB binaries:

1. Install esptool: pip install esptool
2. Put the Super Mini in flash mode: hold BOOT button, press RESET, release BOOT
3. Flash:

python -m esptool --chip esp32s3 --port COM_PORT --baud 460800   write_flash --flash_mode dio --flash_size 4MB --flash_freq 80m   0x0 bootloader.bin 0x8000 partition-table-4mb.bin   0xF000 ota_data_initial.bin 0x20000 esp32-csi-node-4mb.bin
