Other information about this request: Rawalpindi Medical University: A Legacy of Excellence
Rawalpindi Medical College was originally established in Faisalabad on 18th March 1974 and later relocated to Rawalpindi on 5th November 1974, initially operating from an incomplete building at Tipu Road (the Science Block of Gordon College, Rawalpindi), which was eventually handed over to the college. The founder principal, Prof. Abdul Latif, played a pivotal role in shaping the institution, overseeing the construction of student hostels, staff colonies, and the auditorium. Beyond his specialty in anatomy, he built a full faculty and successfully acquired Holy Family Hospital from the missionary church and the Central Government Hospital, which later became Rawalpindi General Hospital and now Benazir Bhutto Hospital.
The college affiliated District Headquarters Hospital as its first teaching hospital. Prof. Mohammad Nawaz, the second principal, along with Prof. Mohammad Iqbal, Professor of Surgery and later Principal, were instrumental in establishing all core components of the college. With the help of the Islamic Development Bank, Prof. Iqbal and Prof. Saad Rana developed a new teaching block at Holy Family Hospital. Subsequent principals, notably Prof. Mubashir Malik, expanded the institution further by establishing the Department of Psychiatry and fostering international collaborations.
In 2007, under the vision of Prof. Musadiq Khan, the Department of Medical Education and the Institute of Allied Health Sciences were launched. Prof. Khan also oversaw the construction of a new teaching block at Holy Family Hospital, along with the ICU and CCU facilities.
The first Rawalian principal, Prof. Mohammad Umar, took office in 2013 and adopted a multi-dimensional approach to further advance the institution. He restructured the undergraduate training program by strengthening the Department of Medical Education (DME), upgrading student libraries, cafeterias, hostels, and the student section. The RMC Park was dedicated to Rawalians, and the Rawalians Facilitation Centre was established to assist students, parents, and alumni working both nationally and internationally. During his tenure, he also organized a historic meeting to build consensus on national undergraduate training guidelines, involving the HEC Chairman, PMDC President, UHS Vice Chancellor, and principals of all medical colleges in Pakistan.
In 2017, Rawalpindi Medical College was upgraded to Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU), cementing its status as a premier institution for medical education in Pakistan. RMU is dedicated to academic excellence, cutting-edge research, and community service. It nurtures future healthcare professionals with a holistic approach, emphasizing empathy, ethics, and responsibility alongside rigorous medical training.
Located in the historic city of Rawalpindi, RMU serves as a hub for aspiring doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals. The university offers undergraduate MBBS programs, postgraduate training (M.Phil, M.S, M.D, FCPS, MCPS), and three Ph.D. programs. Its large, qualified faculty and affiliated hospitals provide hands-on clinical experience.
To date, over 10,718 students have graduated from RMU, including more than 600 international students from countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Nepal, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, the Netherlands, and Indian-occupied Kashmir. Over 1,600 Rawalians are currently serving in healthcare across the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, South Africa, the Gulf, and Far East.
In 2022, RMU achieved 2nd place in merit among all public-sector medical colleges in Punjab, reflecting the trust and confidence of aspiring students and their families.
RMU continues to set the standard in medical education, shaping the future of healthcare and inspiring the next generation of professionals.
