Hi @rohitdash08, here's my planned approach for the Webhook Event System:

1. Database Models (2 new tables)

• webhook_subscriptions — stores user-registered webhooks with fields: id, user_id, url, secret (auto-generated HMAC key), event_types (JSON array like ["expense.created", "bill.paid"]), active, created_at
• webhook_delivery_logs — tracks every delivery attempt: id, subscription_id, event_type, payload, status_code, response_body, attempt, next_retry_at, delivered_at, created_at

2. Signed Delivery (HMAC-SHA256)

• Each subscription gets an auto-generated secret key on creation
• Every outgoing webhook includes an X-FinMind-Signature header computed as HMAC-SHA256(secret, raw_payload) plus a timestamp (X-FinMind-Timestamp) to prevent replay attacks
• Consumers can verify authenticity by recomputing the signature with their secret

3. Event Dispatcher Service

• A webhook_service.py that exposes an emit_event(user_id, event_type, payload) function
• This gets called from existing routes — e.g., expense create/update/delete, bill create/pay, reminder triggered
• Uses the requests library (already in requirements) to POST to subscriber URLs
• Delivery runs async using a background thread to avoid blocking the API response

4. Retry & Failure Handling

• On failed delivery (non-2xx or timeout), log the attempt and schedule retry with exponential backoff (30s, 2min, 15min, 1h — max 5 attempts)
• Uses APScheduler (already installed) to process the retry queue
• After max retries exhausted, mark delivery as failed and optionally deactivate the subscription if consecutive failures exceed a threshold

5. REST API Endpoints

• POST /webhooks — register a new webhook subscription (returns the secret once)
• GET /webhooks — list user's subscriptions
• PATCH /webhooks/{id} — update URL, event types, or active status
• DELETE /webhooks/{id} — remove subscription
• GET /webhooks/{id}/deliveries — view delivery logs for debugging
• POST /webhooks/{id}/test — send a test ping event

6. Supported Event Types

• expense.created, expense.updated, expense.deleted
• bill.created, bill.paid
• reminder.triggered
• budget.suggestion_generated

7. Documentation & Tests

• Full OpenAPI spec update with all webhook schemas and endpoints
• Comprehensive pytest suite covering: subscription CRUD, signature verification, retry logic, event emission from existing routes

Tech Stack — No new dependencies needed. Everything builds on what's already in the repo: Flask, SQLAlchemy, Redis, APScheduler, requests, and hmac/hashlib from Python stdlib.

Root-cause hypothesis: timeout configuration and connection lifecycle handling are inconsistent for long-lived proxy traffic.

First patch plan: reproduce the timeout with deterministic long-lived traffic, trace timeout configuration resolution, patch connection lifecycle handling for public proxy mode, and add regression checks for timeout behavior.
If this aligns with maintainer expectations, I will post repro evidence first and then open the scoped patch.

Overall your proposal aligns well with what we want but how will you ensure at least once delivery without causing duplicate side-effects on the consumer side? also consider adding event version header, and schema versioning strategy.

Instead of fixed retries we should support dead-letter handling and auto disable after repeated failures. Rather than dispatching directly we need domain event emitted and worker processes delivery.

we should avoid n+1 dispatch issues, delivery logs are great we also want correlation IDs, delivery latency metrics, retry metrics, failure classification as well.

Once you're alligned, feel free to proceed
