Again OpenSuse after upgrade to Leap 16

• I read through both the troubleshooting and the known issues sections, and my issue wasn't listed there

Problem description

It is currently with Reaper 7.38 on OpenSuse Leap 16 impossible to open Projects, that have been created before the upgrade from OpenSuse Leap 15.6, if the Project contains Tracks with yabridge VST-Plugins. Some plugins seems to load but in the end Reaper does not start.

What did you expect to happen?

Everything running as it was on OpenSuse Leap 15.6. To be honest: It's the first time in nearly 20 years that I have been facing that many problems when upgrading OpenSuse. I've been very lucky I had Backups of everything.****

What actually happened?

After a fresh yabridgectl sync there are several errors popping up for VST-Plugins. They are all the same, only the plugin is different (starting Reaper again moans the next plugin):

In the end there is this error and a core dump is written. At this point it will always end. Reaper is not startable with the project

Do you use the flatpak version of REAPER? You could also be missing the 32-bit libraries.

Thanks for the answer. No flatpak. And what do you mean by "missing the 32-bit libraries"??

REAPER tries to open the 32-bit versions of the plugins and there is this error

wine: failed to start L"Z:\home\chris.local\share\yabridge\yabridge-host-32.exe.so"

This is followed by

ShellExecuteEx fehlgeschlagen: Datei nicht gefunden.

which might indicate that the file yabridge-host-32.exe.so is missing or it has the wrong permissions. Do you get the same error with 64-bit plugins?

I am not that good in interpreting all those messages. Created a new Wine-Prefix, did a sync on yabridge and started the REAPER Project with with all those VST Plugins. Even there are messages with the 64 bit plugins the error that's causing REAPER to crash is the one that's indicating 32 bit. But the file Z:\home\chris\.local\share\yabridge\yabridge-host-32.exe.so is in the system (checked the path with wine explorer).

Ok, cross checked with audacity, where I have the possibility to reload all VSTs. From what I see it is really just the 32 bit.

I did some digging on the OpenSUSE forums and there were threads about 32-bit Wine. Apparently the support for 32-bit Wine was dropped in Leap 16 according to the release notes:

openSUSE Leap includes wine 10.10, available only in the wow64 flavor. Users requiring 32-bit binary execution should consider using the Flatpak version or a similar solution.

I did notice that the proaudio repo has WoW64 version of Wine 9.21-staging available, which might still allow you to run 32-bit apps/plugins. You could try that and if that doesn't work, you could see if you're able to run yabridge with the flatpak Wine. This thread on OpenSUSE forums could be helpful.

I already use the proaudio repo for wine. And boot-Parameter ia32_emulation is set to 1. I don't know how to handle "running yabridge with the flatpak wine".

Looks like you already have the WoW64 Wine and can't run the 32-bit plugins. The thread I linked had someone attempting to run Wine through flatpak, but didn't seem to succeed in setting it up. You could try using distrobox to use Wine from another distro in Leap 16.

The third option is to switch to a distro that still has 32-bit support. If you want to stick with OpenSUSE, you can use Tumbleweed since that still has 32-bit support and I haven't seen any plans to drop it. I use it myself and I've seen people have more issues with Leap than TW.

You could also try creating a new 64-bit wine prefix and install one of the plugins into that prefix and see if that works while making sure that the 32-bit plugins from the other prefix aren't loaded. You can't have 32-bit Wineprefixes anymore with WoW64. They won't work.
