its not really intuitive at all to have to type in the name of a timezone Exactly, especially a long one such as America/Indiana/Indianapolis. i think a better way to do it would just be to specify the hours yourself.

for example: $timezone -5 would put your timezone at the same time as EST.

The issue is then that this wouldn't adjust for daylight savings, and some timezones behave in weird ways which are only accounted for by the full names. We also can't currently store a union of minute-based timezone offsets and the timezone names. Whilst it's an annoying system right now, the idea is that you only need to go through it once ever and then it's sorted.
