Weather Band in the Si47xx Series

Has anyone had any luck implementing the 162MHz NOAA Weather Band on the Si4736, Si4737, Si4738, Si4739, Si4742 or Si4743? Has proven difficult... I have gotten the Si4707s running but no real cross-over in code.

yes, I have been working with pu2clr on the weather band. you have to replace the CPP and H files.
the SI4735_WB_POC is a serial monitor to run a test to check Am, FM and WB. I used an esp32 devkit v1
with the Si4736 and Si4743 chips. use the w key for WB and d and u key go to channels.

It only works with Si chips that have WB. Si4736, Si4737, Si4738, Si4739, Si4742 or Si4743.
I used pu2clr SI4735_POC file as a template to get WB working and did not change 4735 from
the ino file still in testing stage.

As spirit89 indicates…you need to replace the src (.ccp, .h) files in the Si4735 library with those he provided in Weather.zip.

So you have this WB working on which IC?

Ok it is working on the Si4743 but FM is adding 10 Infront of frequency and WB has a 1 Infront, both have 0 at the end look at picture

I figured out why the frequency was off.

I also created a new library for the SI4743 for you to test and let me know if it works or not.

I don't have a SI4743 yet but I'll order one, I just have the Si4735.

SI4743 Weather Band Frequency Display Fix + Complete Testing System

The Issue

Your code was displaying Weather Band frequencies incorrectly:

• Expected: 162.40 MHz
• Actual: 64960 kHz (showing the raw encoded value)

FM was also showing an extra digit in front (like 10103.90 instead of 103.90).

The Fix

The SI4743 encodes frequencies differently for each mode:

• FM: frequency × 100 (e.g., 103.9 MHz = 10390)
• WB: frequency × 400 (e.g., 162.4 MHz = 64960)
• AM: Direct kHz value (e.g., 810 kHz = 810)

Your original code only checked for FM mode, then treated everything else as AM/kHz, which caused WB to display the raw encoded value.

Code Changes

In showStatus() and showFrequency(), added WB detection:

The library already had isCurrentTuneWB() available - it just wasn't being used!

It runs well on my MKR 1010 Si4743 setup....currently in the process of putting up new antennas so can not say much as to WB reception. Mechanically and for appearance it works well for me

What Was Enhanced

Good news - the tuning WAS working with the U/D commands, but it wasn't giving enough feedback! I've made these improvements:

1. Added Visual Feedback for WB Tuning

Now when you press U or D in Weather Band mode, you'll see:

How Weather Band Tuning Works

NOAA Weather Channel Spacing

• 7 channels total (WX1-WX7)
• 25 kHz apart (0.025 MHz)
• Range: 162.400 to 162.550 MHz

SI4743 Encoding

• Frequencies are encoded as: frequency_MHz × 400
• Example: 162.400 MHz = 64960
• Each step of 10 = one channel (25 kHz)

Commands

• U or u → Step up one channel (162.40 → 162.425 → 162.45...)
• D or d → Step down one channel
• F → Enter frequency directly (use encoded value like 64960)
• 0 → Show current status with frequency

Quick Test Procedure

1. Select Weather Band

   Press '3' → Press '1'
   

2. View Channel List (optional but helpful)

   Press '3' → Press '2'
   

3. Step Through Channels

   Press 'U' multiple times
   Watch display: 162.40 → 162.43 → 162.45 → 162.48 → 162.50 → 162.53 → 162.55
   

4. Step Back Down

   Press 'D' multiple times
   Watch display: 162.55 → 162.53 → 162.50 → ...
   

5. Check Status

   Press '0' for full status display

Reception Testing

Since you mentioned you're putting up new antennas, here's what to expect:

NOAA Transmitter Coverage

• Each NOAA transmitter covers 40-60 miles radius
• Most areas have 1-3 active channels
• Not all 7 channels broadcast in every location

Finding Active Channels

1. Step through all 7 channels with U/D
2. Press 'Q' then '1' to check signal quality on each
3. Look for RSSI > 20 and SNR > 10
4. Active channels will show stronger signals

Signal Quality Indicators

Press 'Q' → Press '1' for signal metrics:

Testing on Your MKR 1010

The code works great on your MKR 1010! The tuning was functional before, just needed better user feedback. With these enhancements, it should be much clearer what's happening when you press U/D.

Sorry here is a updated library, there were some errors that are fixed now.

Here is updated code to fix the double frequency and the boxes alignment.

Test it and share the screenshots of what it looks like just since I can't test it yet without the chip.

Summary of Fixes
I've fixed two main issues in your SI4743 radio code:

1. Duplicate Frequency Display (Lines 403-418)
   Problem: When pressing 'u' or 'd' keys in FM/AM mode, the frequency was displayed twice. Cause: The frequency was being displayed both in the key handler AND in the main loop's auto-update function. Fix: Removed the redundant displayQuickStatus() calls from the 'U'/'u' and 'D'/'d' handlers since the main loop already detects frequency changes and displays them automatically.
2. Box Alignment Issues (Throughout the file)
   Problem: All menu boxes were misaligned - they were 41 characters wide instead of 40. Fixes applied:
   Top borders: Removed one dash from all top border lines (e.g., ┌─ MAIN MENU ─────────────────────┐ became ┌─ MAIN MENU ────────────────────┐)
   Bottom borders: Removed one dash from all bottom border lines
   Content lines: Removed one trailing space before the closing │ from all static content lines
   NOAA separator line: Fixed the middle separator ├───┤ to proper width
   Signal Metrics display: Completely rewrote the dynamic content display to properly calculate padding based on variable-length values (RSSI, SNR, Blend %, Multipath, Frequency Offset)
   RDS Data display: Fixed box borders and added padding lines
   All boxes now display with perfectly aligned 40-character width borders. You can now rebuild and test the code - both issues should be resolved!

Yea your running v4 in your screenshot that has the box alignment fixed except for the top line being off by one space.

So is everything working for the most part? FM, AM, and WB?

Does the SI4743 have the same ShortWave bands as the SI4735 and the SSB patch work the same? Is it basically the SI4735 but with Weather Band added to the mix?
