still working / buildable?

I recently came across your project and just wanted to say that I really like it – great work!

I’d love to try building it myself, and since the project is about a year old, I wanted to ask:

• Does everything still work as described in the repo?
  

• Are the listed components still available, or would you recommend different parts by now?
  

• Is there anything you’d do differently today?

Hey! Yeah the project is still working, and mine still gets used at least a couple of times a week. I haven't done any new development on it, since it kind of achieved the goal what I wanted -- to automatically connect to my bike and stream metrics to InfluxDB. The biggest hurdle is probably building the hardware and setting up InfluxDB so metrics can be stored. However, there's really no reason for setting up InfluxDB if you just want a more detailed display than the OEM one.

The parts should still be available for it, since it's just an ESP development board and off-the-shelf LCD display.

Eventually I'd like to get a custom PCB made for it, but unless my current setup breaks, I don't think I'll be able to get around to that.

Hello, thank you very much for your feedback! I also use my Schwinn regularly and had been thinking about how to log my performance data so I could challenge a friend. To even get meaningful data from my workouts in the first place, your tool comes at just the right time. I can also connect my Apple Watch directly to the bike, but the data is completely off.

Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer, I'm just tinkering a bit with breadboards and LEDs. I don't have any experience with microcontrollers like this. I thought I’d just order an ESP32 with a built-in display (LILYGO T-Display) and upload your code onto it. But as you can imagine, I was immediately hit with hundreds of error messages :D

I tried to adapt the code to my board using ChatGPT, but that didn’t work either. I was this close to throwing the thing out the window. I just lack the knowledge to fully understand the structure of your project. I'd love it if you told me it’s just a minor change I need to make, but I doubt that’s the case, and I’ll probably have to content myself with a “Hello World” on the display of my first ESP32 :D
