Adapting ECAN-E01 Firmware Approach for ECAN-U01 to Work with SavvyCAN

Hello,

I'm currently working with an ECAN-U01 adapter (USB version) which functions correctly with the supplied (poor) software, but I’m unable to receive any CAN data when using SavvyCAN.

I noticed your repository (pmarches/ecan-bridge) focuses on the ECAN-E01 adapter (an Ethernet version) and provides a CLI for configuration. I'm wondering if any of the insights or approaches from your project could be adapted for the ECAN-U01. Specifically, is there any possibility to modify or flash the firmware on the ECAN-U01 to enable compatibility with SavvyCAN?

Any guidance, tips, or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Yes, the configuration software is terrible. Here is a screenshot I worked from. The user manual can help figure out the fields. If you save the parameter file, there are lots of similarities with the wire protocol. The CAN format might be the same between the ethernet and USB versions. I assume SavvyCAN can read from vcan interfaces? You could write a bridge software that makes the ECAN-U01 appear as a vcan interface. I would avoid going down the custom firmware route unless you really know what you are doing. Just reverse engineering the capture protocols is very time consuming, but still faster than writing custom firmware. If your goal is to use SavvyCAN with a ECAN-U01 you have already purchased, I think it is better to just buy a device supported by SavvyCAN. [image: Screenshot 2025-03-13 042430.png] Good luck!

Thanks for the detailed input.

After considering the options and the challenges involved, I've decided it's best to go with a device that’s natively supported by SavvyCAN. I'm considering the 'Pibiger USB to Dual Channel CAN FD Converter SavvyCAN-FD-X2'.
My goal is to perform some man-in-the-middle operations on my CAN bus wiring harness for EV conversions.
