Very interesting project.
I've been reading through the docs for a bit, and i was wondering about the clocksource.

• is Hachi (by means of the Shihai module?) already able to provide midiclock itself or is it supposed to come from an external source through the Launchpad, out over USB to Hachi?
  (I don't have a Launchpad myself, i guess it forwards incoming midi both to midi-out and USB?)

Unfortunately, the two biggest problems with Hachi are both around clocks. The first is that I don't have the timing resolution to generate accurate 24ppqn midi messages from within Java. So when Hachi is the master clock, it simply can't generate midi clocks to send (and thus the shuffle also doesn't work, since it's based on shifting forward or back by clock ticks).

The other problem is that the standard Java midi library won't send midi clock messages. It seems that they simply didn't bother to implement that. I haven't been able to integrate another library yet. Fortunately, it can respond to clock messages, so the best solution is to sync Hachi to an external midi clock.

The difficulty is that Hachi isn't passing through the clocks to its midi output, so if you want something you're sequencing to also get clocks, you need to merge the signals. I've solved this by using a Roland SBX-1, which sends clocks to Hachi as well as taking the midi output of Hachi, merging it with clocks, and sending that on to everything else. It's annoying.

Yes, your setup is basically right. Send clocks into the Launchpad's midi in, and then go from its out to your other gear, and Hachi will clock nicely, let you use shuffle, and control everything else.

I think I need to do a pass over the Hachi docs to make sure everything is up to date. I should make some usage diagrams too, similar to yours. It would definitely be worth showing how the setup with the SBX works.

ah, i understand, thanks for the clarification. Shame about the JRE though. Switching midi-lib sounds like a Hachi 3.0 exercise...

At the risk of stating the obvious: it might be worthwhile to investigate a local clocksource and virtual+loopback midi-ports?

I intend to run Hachi on an RPI3, but one challenge at a time, first run it on windows... :)
