How to install wix from cmd?

I installed wix like this:

dotnet tool install --global wix

It properly installed:

You can invoke the tool using the following command: wix
Tool 'wix' (version '6.0.2') was successfully installed.

But then, when I try to add an extension (ex):

wix extension add WixToolset.UI.wixext

I get this error:

WixToolset.UI.wixext : warning WIX6101: Could not find expected package root folder wixext6. Ensure WixToolset.UI.wixext/7.0.0-rc.2 is compatible with WiX v6.

Why does it happen?
Is there a way to install wix from the cmd without having this error?

This is a workaround, but if there is any better way, I take it.

dotnet tool install --global wix
$wixVersion = (wix --version).Trim()
wix extension add -g "WixToolset.UI.wixext/$wixVersion"

You should specify the version you want to use. Automatically taking the latest version (especially major versions) is a great way to get broken.

I believe it's a great way to be sure our config file always compile with the latest version, so we can catch issue.

Why do you choose to wix.exe instead of a .wixproj? Using wix.exe is more advanced and not generally recommended.

Because I use meson, not directly msbuild.
To be exact, this is what I do: pkgconf/pkgconf#486

If there is better way to implement wix to our project, feel free to provide feedback.
I thought I couldn't use .wixproj without using msbuild.

Our msi is really simple. It just package pkgconf.exe, pkg-config.exe and a .dll and all of them are added to the PATH.
