Layout problem with Hugo's new template system

This seem to be a problem of my site, rather than HB Stack or HugoMods. I've changed the category to Q&A.

After getting some errors after renaming partials and shortcodes to _partials and _shortcodes, I've flattened the layouts directory like this.

I couldn't flatten _shortcodes so I've left them as-is.

After that, I've got this warning message.

Putting those files back to directory tree didn't solve the issue. Hugo still can't find those files.

Since Hugo v0.146.0, they changed how template system works. It is described in their documentation.

Even though they said 'maintain backward compatibility', it seems latest Hugo version (v0.147.7) doesn't like the old structure. I encounter many errors, and symlink can't solve every errors.

It seems HB Stack (and HugoMods) doesn't support new template system.

Can you update repos to follow up latest Hugo release? I'm stuck with v0.145.0, which is the last version before the template system change.

Hmm, why do you replace the separator with dot? Is the new template system required if it is compatible.

If I don't flatten them, I get more error messages. Also, Hugo gets killed because of OOM.

I thought that this can be solved via flattening _partial directory. If I read right, Hugo will understand the flattened files.

So I flattened the files.

This is done by this PowerShell code, saved as layouts/_partials/flat.ps1.

Now I get new error.

Error: html/template:_partials/seo/modules/open-graph/index.html:1:13: no such template "_internal/opengraph.html"

The content of seo.modules.open-graph.index.html is this:

{{- partial "opengraph.html" . -}}

If I understand right, this should point to layouts/_partials/opengraph.html. But it seems that Hugo can't figure it out. So I tried _partials/opengraph.html instead, but it didn't help.

So I copied content of opengraph.html to seo.modules.open-graph.index.html. Now the error message are gone.
I deleted opengraph.html because the content is now duplicated with seo.modules.open-graph.index.html.

Also, rss.xml can't understand partial "hb-custom/functions/get-summary-rss.html" if I flatten files. I must use partial "hb-custom.functions.get-summary-rss.html" instead.

This is why I end up with like this.

If it's compatible, then keep stuff as unchange, it would save your time. If you insist, you'll need to understand how it work, and then adjust your code.

So I copied content of opengraph.html to seo.modules.open-graph.index.html. Now the error message are gone.

I guess the seo.modules.open-graph.index.html wasn't used, you can put any text there, and check your page source code.
Since if template wasn't overrode, then theme's one will be used, which is OK or fixed.

Anyway it is not related to the theme, I just update the modules of HB docs site, and build with latest Hugo version, seems anything is OK. See https://github.com/hbstack/site/actions/runs/15392479401/job/43304906414

I'll just revert everything to shortcodes and partials.
The only thing I had to change was replacing template "_internal/shortcodes/x_simple.html" to template "_shortcodes/x_simple.html" in x.html.

Now I have to dig into how I should rename or edit files to work with new template system, using _partials and _shortcodes.

We have aimed to maintain as much backward compatibility as possible by mapping “old to new,”

I'm worried about the situation might change that they give up supporting 'old layout' someday.
Simply renaming directories to _partials and _shortcodes isn't enough, in my case.

I don't think it will happen, if it's just a naming issue, I don't think it's necessary at all to force theme authors to change existing projects.
