Running a validator node with partial participation

I would like to start a discussion on the possibility / viability of allowing validators to limit their participation / validation functionality for reduced rewards. For instance, the option to run a node which only performs CEX collections (the scope of phase 1 ITN), into mainnet.
The possible advantage here is that people with limited hardware / knowledge / time could assist in decentralising the network without being overwhelmed / left behind during the ITN phases (and pressured to sell their license). They could focus on upgrading only the functionality they are comfortable with. This would require node functions to be distributed / upgraded independently.
This could become a more interesting discussion when the frequency of new validator requirements ramps up. Having pods of validators that specifically focus on weather / sports / RWA (rather than everything) could ultimately be the only way to stay on top of demands.
