Definition (free text, with reference(s), please. PubMed ID format is PMID:XXXXXX)
A serous exocrine acinar cell of the major salivary glands that forms crescent‑shaped caps (demilunes) on predominantly mucous acini in the sublingual gland, draining into the same acinar lumen via intercellular canaliculi and short ductules. This cell contains electron‑dense proteinaceous secretory granules, abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum, and well‑developed Golgi, and secretes a watery, glycoprotein‑rich fluid that supplements mucous saliva with digestive and antimicrobial proteins such as lysozyme and lactoferrin, contributing to oral microbial homeostasis. In humans, serous elements in this gland are largely restricted to such demilunes, in contrast to the purely serous parotid acini. Gamma‑glutamyl transpeptidase enriches serous demilunes in human salivary glands, while Dcpp1 marks homologous demilune cells in mice.
