Are there any tests to see how this will scale with say 100 or 1000 friends in your friend list?

I don't have any unit tests at the moment, no. Each user you follow necessitates joining two torrents (their public key torrent and meta torrent). So, the resource use should scale linearly, but I haven't tested what the practical limit is.
