Another consideration is that using ping isn't optimal since ICMP can be blocked on servers and/or firewalls. Maybe curl can be used to make a web connection, since curl is already a dependency for serverbot. Another option would be to use something like netcat, but I am not sure whether this is included in distros by default (don't think so). And lastly, I could remove the hard check on a working internet connection and let the default errors of failing requests via curl through. Not sure yet...

Also the function is not used as of 1.1.0 so that gives some time to tinker.
