Save all screens/anims into a Project

Rather than considering the crash dump as a “backup” for the user, it might be time to consider a global save of the current project ?

Save Project:

• current picture screen or animation
• current spare screen
• custom brush or animbrush
• current stencil, background
• palette with ranges

This can be supplemented with an automatic backup that can be configured every x minutes.

This would make sense, but it's hard for a new user to understand that PNG and GIF formats don't retain palette ranges, or that brushes and spare screeen aren't saved with the project.

You could save palette metadata inside a PNG file. Since it’s typically only 16 or 32 4 byte hex codes it’d add hardly anything to the file size. Probably just 128 bytes plus a four byte chunk name.

It could be stored as a private ancillary chunk in the PNG. If the first char of the chunk type is lower case, other programs will ignore it. Something like pyDP would work as a chunk name.

Or it could be stored as text in iTXt. Even as text hex codes it’s only 6 bytes per palette entry
