Requesting Design Guidance on "No Data Collection" Message in Add-ons

I’m helping with an issue in the mozilla/multi-account-containers repo.
The task is to ensure that the “No data collection” message shows up properly in Firefox before the end of August.

Since this touches on user-facing design, we’d like your input on:

• Placement and styling of the “No data collection” message
• Consistency with Mozilla’s design principles

Hi @Dejumo . Thanks for picking up that issue!

I've looked at the blog post linked in the issue, and I think there is no need to create a custom UI here.

From what I understand, the UI will be part of Firefox directly and look like this when the addon gets installed by a user:

There are some other variations depending on what data collection is being done. All of these will not be part of the addons, but Firefox.

For your case, the necessary change should be done in the addon's manifest file, to add the necessary fields so that Firefox knows what data collection is done and then can show the correct variation of that dialog when installing the addon.

From the blog post above, it seems that the following fields need to be added to the addon's manifest file, using the correct ID (which I do not know right now):

"browser_specific_settings": {
    "gecko": {
      "id": "@extension-without-data-collection",
      "data_collection_permissions": {
        "required": ["none"]
      }
    }
  },

There is a full example in the "No data collection" section of the blog post.

Thanks for the clarification! I see now that no custom UI is needed, and the right approach is to add the data_collection_permissions field in the manifest.json. I’ll check the “No data collection” section of the blog post and update the manifest accordingly. If I get stuck with the correct ID, I’ll reach out. Appreciate the guidance!

I noticed there’s no manifest.json in this repo. Is the intended change for an addon source repo instead? and
Could you let me know which add-on repo this change should apply to? I want to ensure we update the correct manifest.json.

It's the addon in the same repo as the original issue: mozilla/multi-account-containers#2782. You can find the manifest file here: https://github.com/mozilla/multi-account-containers/blob/main/src/manifest.json. It also already has the ID, so that's no issue there.

I’ve added the data_collection_permissions field under browser_specific_settings.gecko in the manifest and opened a PR with the update: #2792.
