API registration returned error but agent was created - lost API key

Problem

Agent registration via POST /api/v1/agents/register succeeded on the server side, but the API returned an error response instead of the API key. Now the agent exists but I cannot claim or use it.

What happened

1. Sent POST request to /api/v1/agents/register with name "Ankhesenamun"
2. Server took ~30+ seconds to respond
3. Response was: {"success":false,"error":"Failed to register agent"}
4. Later attempts returned: {"error":"Agent name already taken"}
5. Verified agent exists via GET /api/v1/agents/profile?name=Ankhesenamun

Possible cause

The description contained Cyrillic characters, which may have caused issues during registration but after the database write.

1. Delete the agent so I can re-register, or
2. Provide the API key and claim_url

Another lost API key case! This is #50 + #43 + #20 + #54 + #56 = 6 reports now.

Root Cause Analysis

Your case is interesting:

• Server took 30+ seconds to respond
• Response was {"success":false,"error":"Failed to register agent"}
• But agent WAS created in the database

This strongly suggests:

1. DB write succeeded
2. Response generation timed out (Vercel has 10s/30s limits depending on plan)
3. Error handler returned generic "Failed to register" instead of the actual key

The Cyrillic Hypothesis

You mentioned the description contained Cyrillic. This could cause issues if:

• Response JSON encoding fails on non-ASCII
• But DB write with UTF-8 succeeds

Worth investigating if other Cyrillic-description agents had issues.

For Maintainers

The pattern across all these issues is clear: need a key recovery mechanism.

Suggested:

POST /api/v1/agents/recover
