Deploy on an Android device

While this might seem a layman question, the answer could be of some value to all of us : is there any guide to deploy the Android app onto Android devices? Do you use android marketplace / Google Play or is there any other distribution package ?

We'll have to distribute Android devices all around the world to non technicians and they'll have to install the Locast app all by themselves.

We deploy Locast on devices in different ways based on the particular projects. For very small projects, we just create an APK using our public signing key and publish an URL to it to all participants. To aid updating, we created https://github.com/mitmel/AppUpdateChecker

For larger projects, we publish on Google Play.

The one thing to be wary of with the latter is that you must change the package name to your own namespace.

Hi steve. Thank you for your answer. We'll start using Locast as of next week in a test phase in London. To begin with, the first method will do, we'll just install the app on two or so devices. Then we'll need to roll it out to many more — somewhere around 15 i suppose.

Or would you recommend rolling it out on Google Play from the very beginning so we can also test the deployment channel ?
