Updating screen (and state?) delay is too big

When I run with

python autoLock.py -frequency 0.5 -minTimeBetweenLocks 5 -timeUntilLock 5 --displayWebcam

It takes 4 screen updates until a change in the real world is reflected by what AutoLock sees.
