I was able to get multicast traffic working with my WSL2 instance (for ROS2 development) using the steps below. Here are my notes incase it helps others:

  • In the latest WSL2 Kernel CONFIG_IP_MULTICAST is actually enabled by default. You can confirm this by running
    zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_IP_MULTICAST
    
  • Enable Mirror mode networking and disable firewall. Your .wslconfig file should look like this. This can also technically be configured by the WSL2 Setting GUI.
    [wsl2]
    networkingMode=Mirrored
    firewall=false
    
  • Run the following command in PowerShell window with admin privileges to Configure Hyper-V firewall settings to allow inbound connections:
    Set-NetFirewallHyperVVMSetting -Nam…
