It's better to not have a comments system, rather than have one without any comments whatsoever. I think that the way forward is to advertise specific individual posts on other platforms and maybe tag on the comments page if it blows up, or else do reposts, but that may harm the SEO.
Using Webmentions as a comments system looks like a poor choice to me due to no spam protection and low adoption. And besides that, Giscus integration is much more straightforward.
