Fonts to use

A sans-serif font like Inter is making chunks of text harder to read on desktop. Increasing its font weight might help. Also, consider switching to Playfair Display for long-form text, or to Hind (although it's not a variable font), but refrain from ditching Inter completely.

Timeline copy looks awful. Consider a font type change, maybe to IBM Plex Serif.

Playfair Display has a large lowercase which helps it work for the mid-sized copy on the web, but its readability is really stretched at small sizes. This may have been rectified with support for optical sizing. Libre Caslon Display is the display version of Libre Caslon Text, optimized for web headlines.

EB Garamond is paired with Inter on Wordpress. Yet, it doesn't come with optical sizing. Roboto Serif and Fraunces have optical sizing as well as grade and softness, respectively.

In the end, the chosen font pair was Inter and Source Serif, with Geist Mono as a monospace font (haven't been used yet). Refer to the examples here and here.
