Add Map View for Photos in MEGA iOS App

Describe the feature you'd like

I’d like the MEGA iOS app to include a map view for photos, similar to the “Places” album in the native iOS Photos app. This would allow users to browse their photo library based on geolocation data embedded in the images. It’s a very intuitive and visual way to explore memories, especially for travel or event-based photos.

Additional context

This feature could make MEGA a true alternative to iCloud Photos for many users. Right now, the lack of location-based browsing is a limitation for fully switching from iCloud to MEGA. I believe this is one of the key reasons people continue to pay for iCloud despite using MEGA for storage. Adding a photo map would enhance usability and appeal, especially for users who rely heavily on their photo library.

We’re actively exploring the implementation of a map view for photos across all MEGA platforms — iOS, Android, and Web. As you rightly pointed out, this would significantly enhance the browsing experience, especially for travel and event-based memories.

As a first step, we’ve already added location information to the photo info view, including a map preview for photos with embedded geolocation data. The next phase of our work involves investigating a full map-based browsing experience, similar to what you described — allowing users to explore their photo libraries visually based on location.

A key aspect currently under discussion is selecting a consistent and privacy-conscious map API. Using Apple Maps on iOS and Google Maps on Android/Web could result in inconsistent experiences and fragmented data handling. We’re evaluating options that ensure cross-platform alignment while respecting user privacy and delivering a smooth, unified experience.

Excited to hear this is on the roadmap! Unified, privacy-friendly map view would be a great addition. Do you have an estimated timeline for when this feature might be merged or released?

As a suggestion, it might make sense to use Apple Maps on iOS, especially since many Apple users appreciate having features that feel native and integrated out of the box. It could help make the experience feel more seamless on iOS.
