This is not included in Magento, yet. And as far as I know it is not planned. The development process of Magento (1.x) is not transparent and there is no option to contribute.

I offered a pull request to the fork MagePlus, but this project seems to be pretty dead:
mageplus/mageplus#98

What do you mean by sharing the code? It is available here at github, can be cloned and downloaded and it is licensed under the LGPL open source license.

There used to be a report in the Magento forums, but this seemed to be removed when magento updated their forum software.

quick note for others working through magento1 modules still - this same feature was added to open-mage OpenMage/magento-lts#501

also thanks @tux-rampage still getting good usage out of this code all these years later 😀
