sometimes there are repeated commit messages, so would be nice to know which one is newer

That makes sense and could be as easy as adding "%ar" to the format string. I've not had that specific need myself so I'm not sure it makes sense to add, I imagine all the pretty format options are relevant for someone somewhere but I can imagine this being a pretty common one.

Making it configurable could be an option but doesn't exclude changing the default and hacking the script might be just as easy as finding the right configuration knob.

I'll need to think about this one for a while, if anyone wants to chime in on what colour to make the bikeshed feel free!

If you need ideas about the colors, I'm used to some git log alias colors I've using for years (I don't have info about the alias origin):
