Amazing work! Possible to simplified into a simpler RTF field editor?

Greetings!

Fantastic work. I know that blocks and scripts are relatively new to Airtable, but I couldn’t believe that this hadn’t been done before. Really really impressive!

I’m a recent Notion convert, and I desperately miss some of the free text abilities. I work for a non-profit and we’re trying to make the transition to Airtable, but the lack of solid RTF is killing us :)

I’ve been hunting for something that would load an RTF from a selected record. So 100% how you have it, but for any record across a base. I’m definitely not a developer, though I’ve been looking at your code trying to see how it might be possible.

That's an interesting question. I'm admittedly unsure what's possible offhand, but you've piqued my curiosity!

Just to be sure I understand, do you use Airtable's "Long text" fields for rich text, or do you have RTF files stored in "Attachment" fields? Thanks in advance!

Yes, Long Text field.

Here’s my thoughts on what would be amazing (and super useful for other uses).

Block that loads a LongText field in an RTF editor. Your editor, the default Airtable one, or the one used in the EasyDoc would be good. Markdown support is ideal :). But I’d take ANYTHING.

The block loads a LongText labeled “Notes” on record select. A nice option could also be to be able to “pin” the specific LongText in that block, so that you could go to check data in other records/tables. Perhaps a lock/unlock button at the top of the block?

Got it! That definitely sounds like it's within the realm of possibility.

I forgot to demo the "Lock editor" button in this video, but it works exactly as you described:

Amazing! You are a wizard! I think there will be a HUGE want for this. Could be a good block to help get you a lot of custom Dev work too.

Is this TinyMC? Do online images work? When I tried your demo Knowledge setup I couldn’t get images to work.

That is indeed TinyMCE. I hadn't quite figured out images by the time I submitted Knowledge Block for Airtable's hackathon, but I've been looking that in more detail.

Here's a new demo of one approach. I added an Attachments field name "Files" that can be used to store images. While editing a note in the block, you can add any of those images wherever you like.

Rich text, with images.mov.zip

It should also be easy to let people add publicly-available images from outside of Airtable just by pasting in links to those images.

Hot dang!  This is amazing!  I’ll try to give it a whirl tomorrow. I tried your Knowledge block, but wasn’t sure how to actually “install” it, vs just running it locally? IM SO STOKED! Luke!

Belated thanks for the question, @peripatew!

I believe these steps should get you up and running with Knowledge Block:

1. Duplicate this base. (The block currently requires a fairly rigid set of tables and fields, but I could imagine changing that in the future.)
2. While, creating a new block, select the Remix from Github option.
3. From the root of your new block, run block run or block release.

If those don't seem to do the trick, just let me know!
