meaning of node number?

hi all,
I was trying to find what is the meaning of the node number on the headers of the assembled contigs, but couldn't find an answer.
I ask because for the results I am getting it seems like contigs from 'Node 1' consistently present a better score and tend to be longer than contigs marked as Node 2...3...etc
