~2 second delay to get explorer window; files accessed over sshfs

I'm experiencing a delay of about two seconds from the time I'm requesting the explorer to the time the buffer-selection window comes up. This applies only when the files (buffers) are accessed over the sshfs mount (I haven't tried NFS). The number of open files does not matter - i.e. as few as 2 files in the selection window.

When I'm doing :ls the buffers are listed instantaneously.

It seems that there is some sort of file-checking every time the Explorer is requested, which requires a network round-trip.

Btw, this isn't something new. I've seen the lag since at least v7.4.2 until now, v7.4.19. Finally got the courage to mention it because the plugin is nothing short of amazing.

Thanks for using bufexplorer. Sorry for the hassles it has given you right now.

I do not work with networked files very often so I have not seen this before.

Do not hesitate in the future to point out something that is wrong. I may or may not be able to fix it; however, there are lots of people who monitor this plugin, so someone is bound to figure out a solution :)

As of now, it looks like something in the GetBufferInfo() method. When I test the plugin with a networked file, I am seeing timing similar to what you are getting. Not sure what the culprit is thought...

I'm unable to reproduce this issue using BufExplorer 7.6.0 and Vim 9.1.445, with a clean Vim configuration that contains only BufExplorer, running on x86_64 Ubuntu 24.04.

First, I mounted an sshfs path from a server on my Ethernet LAN:

mkdir manyfiles
sshfs myserver:/manyfiles manyfiles
cd manyfiles

I then created the file 5000files.out from the manyfiles/ tree (taken from a clone of the Rust programming language's repository); the file contains lines like this:

rust/library/unwind/src/wasm.rs:1:1:error
rust/library/unwind/src/libunwind.rs:1:1:error
rust/library/unwind/src/lib.rs:1:1:error
rust/library/unwind/src/unwinding.rs:1:1:error
rust/library/sysroot/src/lib.rs:1:1:error

I then launched vim and read 5000files.out into the QuickFix window:

:cgetfile 5000files.out

The :cgetfile operation took about 3-4 seconds to run.

I then launched BufExplorer via \be.

It launched in well under a second. Pressing u to enable the display of unlisted buffers took perhaps half a second to show the files.

These timings are very similar to what I get when I have the same tree of files stored locally.

I also tried this same thing over NFS to the same server's files; in that case, the :cgetfile was about the same speed, as was \be; but pressing u for the first time took perhaps 2 or 3 seconds.

Unlike in the comments from 2017, I can't see any performance-related issues when using a small number of files over the network; everything is visually instantaneous.

Is anyone is still seeing this issue for a small number of files?
