Support videos in the photo frame

Small looping videos and cinemagraphs (like the ones shown in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEaUsaNEzjY) look great on a photo frame

If NextCloud photos app supports videos, what would it take for this project to support them?

The quick answer is: I don't know.

Currently I'm using nextcloud's preview functionality for generating well-sized images, and for the smart crop feature I'm drawing the image to an html canvas in order to use my own heuristic.

For videos to work I'd have to change both of those strategies.

On top of that I should probably transcode videos to get good browser support and to not waste bandwidth.

So I'd definitely need to do some research up front, and my gut feeling tells me that it would take a decent amount of work to do well.
