Hi @HanzoDev1375 This repository uses tools developed by the termux team. Specifically, we build a bootstrap here. The output contains native binaries that can run directly on android.

The bootstrap zip files are extracted into jniLibs folder during gradle build by renaming them to something with a .so extension and keeping a mapping of changes - but it is not really a shared object. This is done just to let those files be packaged into the APK. During app's runtime, these files are renamed back into their original name and placed into the correct path.

We could theoretically build only .so shared objects, but it requires a lot of manual work to write JNI mappings for everything. Instead, the binaries that are built are invoked directly using ProcessBuilder in Java. Previously the app used exec() from Runtime.

For Java based code, please check android-10 branch on the termux-app repository. That is where I took inspiration from when building the app. The termux team has always been helpful.

There are a few ways to run native code on Android. One is to compile native code to shared object libraries- for which you need to create JNI mappings, while loading it with System.loadLibrary. docs.

The second is to compile software with NDK and get "executables" that you can invoke directly on device. just keeping in mind you can't download such binaries at runtime because of changes in Android 10.

JekyllEx uses the second because it's just easier as there are so many moving parts. We want to provide desktop level experience where you can run commands just like in a terminal. JNI based approach is better only if you have a pre-defined set of things that your app should be able to do.

ProcessBuilder is essentially a way to run a command. Something that you would usually type in terminal, can be run in Java/Kotlin by using that.

The command you run, needs an executable (ruby in the example above). But the thing is Android CPU's accept a different instruction set than other kinds of CPUs. So software that works on your desktop won't work as it is on Android. So you need to compile ruby - or whatever you're trying to run - using Android NDK's C/C++ compilers. As described here.

Android docs are not that good for NDK. And you also need a lot of patches- because software is generally not directly portable to Android (read more). Termux team does a lot of work to make patches for a wide variety of software. This repository uses those patches, along with custom patches to build something that works for JekyllEx app's usecase.

The ruby binary is in bin folder inside the zip. Besides there is lib which has libruby.so.3.3.4 and include which has the headers.

But these are compiled for the prefix xyz.jekyllex. and have hard coded paths to different things very specific to jekyllex. like this. This also alters the default behaviours - bundled gems, require paths, etc. All this is for jekyll and android 10+ specific environment.

If you want standard ruby experience you should compile from source using the original termux patches.

Sorry I don't get what you mean. Looks like your IDE bundles a lot of different tools. Can you describe how your app bundles all these? I see that there are many native libraries you have. Will be worth exploring how you compile and set those up.

Okay, no problem. I updated the package and installed my own program, but the Java code I wrote to run libruby.so.3.3.4 gives an access error. Do you have a solution?

Based on error message it looks like the permission issue is with run_ruby.sh. chmod +x is not working. Are you trying on Android 10 or above by any chance? And what is inside run_ruby.sh?

I just wrote a test code but no it doesn't work, it's strange Python works but Ruby doesn't

Well, I thought the main executable file was ruby.so.3.3.4, so which of the main so binary files is the executable file?
