unable to place broken tool heads into crucible or forge

basically just the title. can't heat up my copper pickaxe heads to fix them :( i also tried just putting the tool head into the firepit without a crucible, but it says it requires a smelting container. i assume it affects other tool heads too but idk i haven't had another tool break yet in this world

i am using v.1.21.6 of the game and 1.8.3 of the mod

other mods i'm using that Might conflict somehow are ancient tools and better firepit, but i've used better firepit before on 1.20 so i doubt its a conflict lol
