What are the possibilities to alter the status of an item in item master or status of a purchase order dynamically through XtendM3?

I have a requirement like mentioned below. Please advise the possible solutions or resources.

Requirement : Change the status of a purchase order dynamically.
Questions : 1) Is there any API to directly alter the status of an purchase order with XtendM3?
2) can we create a custom API to update data in Infor M3 ?
