Differences to specification

While I couldn't find an official authoritative specification, some of the implementations here seem to go against conventions:

Newline is not prohibited in specifications I've seen. I've got my tree formatted on purpose, split across newlines. You throw an error for that.

Also, names should not accept whitespace, you do.

I'll see whether I can fork and fix it.
