Sometimes instructors edit an assignment’s document or group settings after students have begun annotating, which can cause previously made annotations to disappear.

Your solution

When an instructor clicks the Edit button (or the equivalent in Canvas), display a dialog warning that changing the assignment’s document and/or group settings will cause existing annotations disappear.
