If you're using 1. and a., indentation works fine. So you might alternatively want to get (1) and (a) be recognized as list element starters in markdown.

I don't know our possibilities to change the markdown-package, that does the formatting work, directly, but would it be useful to add an additional function in the text.render?

It replaces ".indent.[...]./indent." through "< div style="margin-left:20px;">[...]< /div>"
and indents the text 20px relative to the rest.

I wouldn't do something like that. Rather add a class and do the styling with css, but I still don't like adding that to the render function. Rather use a markdown extension.

But as a simpler alternative solution, I'd suggest to use proper list markup and use pure css hacks to display the parentheses in modern browsers?
