Game can crash when running at the increased maximum speed

• Install the game with the "Increase max speed" patch enabled.
• Open this solution in the bigger sandbox: Incompatible with GoG Version #1 (comment)
• Drag the simulation speed slider all the way to the right.
• Click "Simulate".

After a short while the game will crash.

Here's what I've found so far:

• It seems to be crashing in the DirectX 11 renderer.
• If I remove the method that patches the max game speed, the crash no longer happens.
• It doesn't crash in the regular sandbox, just the bigger one.
• The default speed multiplier is 30 and I was increasing it to 100. I tried a smaller number like 60 but that crashes as well.
• At first I thought it was the trace animation that was crashing, but it crashes even if I click on "hide wires".

I have no idea how to fix this so for now I've made the "increase max speed" patch disabled by default (as of 1.2.0).

This crash only seems to affect the Windows version.

I can't reproduce the crash under wine on linux, but instead the very bottom of the sandbox area gets visually corrupted (and it managed to corrupt the image used on the save game selection screen).

If I edit config.cfg (in the same directory as saved games) and enable OS.Windows.UseOpenGL then the corruption does not occur.

Note that switching to the OpenGL renderer also reduces CPU usage (because the OpenGL renderer seems to respect VSync properly, unlike the DirectX renderer).
