Cannot enable prefab: "No variants found for ':app'" error

Not a problem with the library itself, but I'm at my wit's end. Seemingly following the instructions to the letter and can't make it work. As soon as I add prefab true to my build.gradle, Gradle sync fails with error "No variants found for ':app'". Any ideas, any advice? Here's what my build.gradle looks like:
