Create the Pull Request

On GitHub:

  1. Go to: https://github.com/gioelelm/gioelelm.github.io/pulls

  2. Click: "New pull request"

  3. Set branches:

    • Base: dev
    • Compare: claude/evaluate-hugo-migration-FqH97

  4. Click: "Create pull request"

  5. Copy this title:

    Add automated Hugo deployment with GitHub Actions

## Summary

This PR implements automated deployment for the Hugo-based website using GitHub Actions, eliminating the need for manual builds and Mac dependency.

## Problem Solved

- ✅ No more manual building (edit → build → copy → push)
- ✅ No Mac dependency (builds on GitHub's servers)
- ✅ CNAME automatically included (no manual copying)
- ✅ Same design, zero visual changes

## Changes

### Automation
- **`.github/workflows/hugo-deploy.yml`** - GitHub Actions workflow
  - Triggers on push to `dev` branch
  - Downloads Hugo 0.53 binary
  - Builds site with `hugo` command
  - Deploys to `master` branch automatically

### Configuration
- **`static/CNAME`** - Moved from root to static/
  - Now automatically copied to `public/` during build
  - Preserves custom domain: gioelelamanno.com

- **`.gitignore`** - Updated to exclude build artifacts
  - `public/`, `hugo`, `hugo_*.tar.gz`, `LICENSE`

## Testing

✅ **Build Test**
- 151 pages generated successfully
- 125 static files (includes CNAME)
- Build time: ~500ms
- 0 errors, 6 warnings (non-critical)

✅ **CNAME Test**
- Correctly placed in `static/`
- Auto-copied to `public/CNAME`
- Contains: `gioelelamanno.com`

✅ **Workflow Validation**
- YAML syntax validated
- Uses official GitHub Actions
- Proper permissions configured

## Your New Workflow After Merge

# 3. Wait ~2 minutes - deployment happens automatically!

Monitoring

After merge, monitor deployments at:

Green checkmark = successful deployment (takes ~2 minutes total)

Migration Strategy

Current approach: Docker freeze with Hugo 0.53

  • ✅ Works reliably, no changes to design
  • ✅ Solves immediate automation problem
  • ⚠️ Long-term: Consider migrating to modern framework (see MIGRATION_SUMMARY.md)

Future options evaluated:

  • Modern Hugo + Hugo Blox
  • Astro (modern static site generator)
  • AI-native approach

## After Merging

### First Automatic Deployment

1. The merge to `dev` will trigger the first automatic build
2. Go to: https://github.com/gioelelm/gioelelm.github.io/actions
3. Watch the workflow run (takes ~2 minutes)
4. Green checkmark = success!
5. Visit https://gioelelamanno.com (wait 1-2 min for GitHub Pages)

Just follow the guide in `QUICK_START.md`:
