Python error during installation

This is probably something I'm doing wrong, but: I'm installing on a new Raspberry Pi Zero 2W attached to a Waveshare Photo Painter 7.3 screen.

It's a clean install of Raspberry Pi OS:

$ uname -a

I get as far as the pip install -r requirements.txt step in the installation and I see this error:

This could be a generic Python library error and not related to the project? Should I be using an earlier version of Python or Raspberry Pi OS?

Okay, changing the Pillow requirement in the requirements.txt to Pillow==10.4.0 allowed the installation to continue until this step:

I'm wondering if this is related to other e-ink python projects I installed earlier. Will try with a fresh install of Raspberry Pi OS.
